Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit

Zoloft FDA Recall Information

Zoloft & Other SSRI's Linked to Birth Defects

A recent study published in Clinical Epidemiology, found that taking SSRI's while pregnant, doubles or in some cases quadruples the risk of birth defects. The study looked at over 200,000 pregnant women from Denmark. The authors found that the risk of serious heart malformations was more than doubled when a pregnant women, took an SSRI in their first trimester of pregnancy. The risk was even greater with certain types of SSRI's. The popular SSRI- Zoloft (generic Sertraline), was found to triple the risk of heart malformations, while Lexapro (generic Escitalopram) doubled the risk of any malformation and quadrupled the risk of Septal defects- a type of heart defect.

With regard to Zoloft, this is the third study showing heart defects are significantly increased with use of the drug in pregnancy. Zoloft is still a Pregnancy Category C drug unlike Paxil which has already been changed to the more serious Category D. These Pregnancy Categories help doctors decide whether on not to prescribe certain drugs during pregnancy. The D category tells doctors that studies have been done in humans which have found evidence of birth defects. The lesser C category says that no evidence has been found in Human studies, but there has been some evidence from animal studies.(See: FDA Zoloft Pregnancy Alert

Zoloft and other SSRI's are known to increase the risk of serious heart & lung birth defects in the unborn babies. These birth defects include Serious Congenital Heart Defects, Austim, Atrial or Ventricular Septal Defects (Holes in the Heart Wall), Heart Valve Defects, Neural Tube Defects (Spina Bifida), PPHN, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Transposition of Great Arteries, Coartation of the Aorta, Tetrology of Fallot (TOF), Pulmonary Stenosis, Abdominal Defects Omphalocele and Cranial Skull Defects / Craniosynostosis.

FDA Recall of Zoloft

Currently as 1-1-2012 there is no news of any Zoloft recall by the FDA. There is however much speculation that the current Category C status that Zoloft enjoys may in fact be changed to a Category D like Paxil due to the increased birth defects to babies both of mothers taking Paxil. For more Zoloft Recall Information by the FDA we would encourage you to monitor this site or the FDA website.
